Periwinkle (Vinca minor), aka Small Periwinkle, Lesser Periwinkle, Dwarf Periwinkle, Common Periwinkle or Creeping Myrtle (no relation), is a species of flowering plant in the Dogbane family (Apocynaceae), native to Europe and Turkey. The plant is a viny, evergreen shrub spreading along the ground and reaching heights of 10 – 15 cm (4-6in). The leathery leaves are opposite, 2 – 4 cm (0.75-1.5in) long and 1 – 2.3 cm (0.5-1in) wide with a glossy, dark green. The pale purple or white flowers are solitary in the leaf axis and the fruit is a pair of follicles, containing numerous seeds.

Periwinkle contains various alkaloids (e.g. robinin, vincamine), flavons, saponin, bittern, quercetin heteroside, vitamin C and mineral salts, all of which contribute to the tonifying effect of the plant on blood circulation and oxygenation of the brain, the inner ear and the retina. Double-blind studies have shown that Periwinkle helps alleviate vascular dementia.

Ménière’s Disease (recurring dizziness and possible hearing loss linked to fluid imbalance of the inner ear) and hardness of hearing (old age) may improve by use of Periwinkle in combination with ear candles.

History: In medieval times, Periwinkle was a popular medicinal herb with a broad range of uses for treating old age symptoms like memory loss, ringing in the ears, nausea, headache, hardness of hearing (amblyacousia), hypertension (high blood pressure).

Note: Do not overdose, as this may lead to nausea, vomiting, dizziness and heart palpitations.

Contraindications: Brain tumor, cardiac infarction (coronary thrombosis), pregnancy
