Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), also known as Quaker Comfrey, Boneset or Knitbone, is a perennial flowering plant in the Borage family (Boraginaceae), native to Europe. The leafy stem, 1/2 to 1 meter (2-3ft) high, is stout, angular and hollow, broadly winged at the top and covered with bristly hairs. The lower, radical leaves are very large, up to 25 cm (10in) long, ovate in shape and covered with rough hairs which promote itching when touched. They decrease in size the higher they grow up the stem, which is much branched above and terminated by one-sided clusters of drooping flowers, either creamy yellow, or purple, growing on short stalks. The fruit consists of four shining nutlets, perforated at the base, and adhering to the receptacle by their base.
Bio-active ingredients include mucilage, tanning agents, allantonin (which is thought to help replace and thus repair cells in the body through its proliferant properties), asparagin, inulin, saponin, cholin, consolidin, vitamins B1, B2, B12, C, P, calcium, phosphorus, iron, cobalt, manganese, and silicic acid; in concert, applied externally, they have cooling, scar-promoting, detumescent (reducing swellings), pain-killing and anti-inflammatory properties. Taken orally, they alleviate stomach and intestinal disorders, and diarrhea. With stubborn cough, Comphrey brings relief and promotes expectoration.
History: In folk medicine, Comphrey has been used traditionally to treat open wounds and injuries of tendons, ligaments and bones.
Counter Indications: Do not overdose. Do not take Comfrey orally or apply to the skin if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. It contains chemicals (pyrrolizidine alkaloids, PAs), that can potentially cause liver damage, lung damage, and cancer.
Take 3-6 capsules daily, with plenty of water.
