Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), also known as English Plantain, Buckhorn Plantain, Ribleaf and Lamb’s Tongue, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Plantain family (Plantaginaceae), native to the British Isles, but today widespread in europe, the Americas and Australia.
The plant is a rosette-forming perennial herb, with leafless, silky, hairy flower stems of 10 – 40 cm (4–15in) length. The root is widely branched, may reach 60 cm (24in) into the soil. The basal leaves are lanceolate or erect, 5 – 40 cm (2-15in) in height, scarcely toothed with 3-5 strong parallel veins narrowed to short petiole. Grouping leaf stalk deeply furrowed, ending in a oblong inflorescence of many small flowers each with a pointed bract. Each flower produces one or two seeds. Flowers are purple-blue, 4 mm (0.15in) in diameter, 4 bent back lobes with brown midribs, long white stamens.
Bio-active ingredients of Ribwort Plantain include essential oils, chlorophyll, iridoid-glycosides (e.g. aucubin, catapol, asperuloside), mucilage, tanning agents, aucubin, rennet enzymes, invertin, emulsin, vitamins A, C, K, sulphur, mineral salts, silicic acid, phosphoric acid. These sustances have blood coagulating, wound-healing, mucous-resolving, cramp-relieving, anti-bacterial, anti-catharric and fever reducing, accorfding to recent research even anti-biotic, properties.
History: According to Father Sebastian Kneipp, the German founder of the naturopathic movement in the early 19th century (‚Kneipp Water Cure‘), fresh Ribwort Plantain juice may improve hearing, and soothe bee and insect bites.
Note: The seeds of Ispaghul (Plantago ovata), a different Plantain variety, is used as a gel-laxative rich in fiber.
Counter indications: Patients with a history of pollen allergies should not use Ribwort Plantain.
Take 3-6 capsules daily, with plenty of water; optionally combine with Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and Thyme (Thymus serpyllum).
