Java Tea (Orthosiphon stamineus), aka Cat Whiskers, is a perennial, herbaceous plant in the Mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the island of Java (Indonesia) and parts of Africa and Australia. The roots can be thick and woody, the leaves are dented and opposite; the light blue flowers make large florescences which are reminiscent of cat’s whiskers.
The medicinal properties of Java Tea are well researched; among other, cholesterin-reducing and gall-promoting effects were observed, as well as increased elimination of sodium (which in turn reduces water retention) and elevated nitrogen levels in the blood. Java Tea is helpful with treatment of kidney stones; it is often used in conjunction with weight loss programs and for treatment of cellulite. In combination with Muciline, it may help to reduce hunger cravings.
History: Throughout history, southeast-asian populations (India, Malaysia) have consumed Java Tea, or ‘Misai Kucing’ as it is regionally known, as a herbal tea to generally enhance health and wellbeing. In Europe the tea became known only in the late 1920’s, as a remedy for urinary congestion and diseases of the kidney and urinary bladder.
Note: Java Tea may be used for prolonged periods without fear of negative or addictive side effects.
