Lavender (Lavandula officinalis flos), also called English Lavender (although not native to England) is a flowering, strongly aromatic plant or shrub and member of the Mint (or Deadnettle) family (Lamiaceae), native to the western Mediterranean. Lavender shrubs can grow as high as 2 metres (7ft) tall. The leaves are evergreen, 2–6 cm (0.75–2.5in) long, and 4–6 millimetres (0.16–0.24in) wide. The flowers are pinkish-purple, produced on spikes 2–8 cm (0.75–4in) long at the top of slender, leafless stems 10–30 cm (4–12 in) long.

The flowers and leaves are used in herbal medicine (lavender oil, herbal tea). The flowers are also used as a culinary herb, most often as part of the French herb blend called Herbes de Provence.

Lavender essential oil, when diluted with a carrier oil, is often used with a relaxing massage. Products for home use, such as lotions, eye pillows (including lavender flowers or the essential oil itself), soaps and bath oils are also popular. Sometimes Lavender is combined with Golden Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) or Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata).

Dried Lavender flowers and Lavender essential oils are also used as a prevention against clothing moths. The medicinal benefits, which include calming, disinfecting, even pain and cramp soothing properties, may be due to the mix of ingredients which include essential oils, linalcool (20-35%), linylacetate (30-55%), borneol, cineole, camphor, sesquiterpene, various cumarin compounds, tanning agents (5-10%) and saponins. Lavender leaves are used (externally) to treat rheumatism, gout, sciatica, joint dislocations, neuralgic and shooting pains, skin itches.

Try this recipe for instant alertness, followed by deep relaxation to promote a sound and restorative sleep: mix 10ml (1/3 oz) Lavender oil and ½ cup cream and add to bath water; relax for 1/2 hour.

History: Lavender is a traditional medicinal herb that already back in the 11th century made its way from the south of France over the Alps to the north of Europe. Lavender was declared healing plant of the year 2008.
