Mouse Ear Hawkweed (Hieracium pilosella) is a member of the Daisy family (Asteraceae), native to Europe and Asia. Like most Hawkweed species it shows tremendous variation and is a complex of several subspecies with hundreds of varieties and forms. The plant grows well on dry, nutrient-depleted soil and rocky slopes.

Mouse Ear Hawkweed has unique properties which help with elimination ; like a antibiotic, it is effective against infections (this might explain the popular use with Malta Fever, aka Mediterranean Fever, a undulant fever caused by Brucella melitensis). Also useful for treatment of gall stones, grains.

The plant contains bitterns and mucilage, umbelliferone, resins and trace minerals.

History: Castore Durante, a century chief physician to the papal court of the 16th centurs, wrote: ‘’The sap of this herb helps with external wounds as well as ulcers of the stomach, mouth and genitals.’’ The german author, composer and mystic Hildegard von Bingen describes the herb as a remedy to improve eye sight (compresses with a tincture). In folk medicine it has long been used to treat the afore mentioned disorders.
