Cowplant (Gymnema sylvestre), also called Australian Cowplant, Ram’s Horn or Gymnema, is a herbal plant in the family Asclepiadaceae (Asclepiadoiceae), native to central India and Sri Lanka. This plant is a staple in Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine and well known for its blood sugar reducing properties. If you place a small amount of Cowplant powder on the tongue, sweet changes to bitter (i.e. chocolate tastes salty) and the absorption of sugar from the digestive system is reduced by 50%. The hindi word for Cowplant, ‘Gurmar’, means ‘sugar destroyer’. The active compound causing this effect is a group of acids called Gymnemic acids. In the US, it is sold as a natural sugar blocker and used in treatment of diabetes.

Studies confirm the ability of Cowplant to lower blood sugar levels and reduce the craving for sugar. The Gymnemic acids inhibit absorption of glucose from the small intestines into the blood. Cowplant even appears to help in regenerating the pancreas: the insulin-producing beta cells are restored or stimulated to produce insulin.

In other studies it was demonstrated that Cowplant reverses the effects of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) in liver, kidneys and muscles. It also stimulates body metabolism, helps burn body fat and lowers cholesterin and triglyceride levels. Cowplant promotes a healthy stomach and a healty digestion.

The consumption of Cowplant causes no side effects; the blood sugar lowering effects only take place with patients suffering from diabetes. In many weight loss programs it is combined with Garcinia cambogia to help reduce appetite and craving for sweets.

The bio-active ingredients of Cowplant leaves include triterpenoid saponins, pentatriacontane, alpha- and beta-chlorophylls, phytin, resins, d-quercitol, tartaric acid, formic acid, butyric acid, lupeol, glycoside and Stigmasterol.
