The Kola nut is the seed (nut) of the Kola Tree, a genus (Cola) of evergreen trees in the Mallows (Malvaceae) family, native to the tropical rainforests of Africa. The fruit of the tree contains up to 10 nuts which contain caffeine and are used as a flavouring ingredient in beverages (hence the term ‚cola‘). The tree can grow to a height of 18 meters (60ft), has ovoid, about 25 cm (10in) long leaves and yellow flowers with purple spots.
The ingredients of the Kola nut include caffeine (3.5%), theobromine, catechins, epicatechin, procyanidin, tanning agents, starch (45%), proteins, sugars, lipids and trace minerals. Unlike with coffee, the caffeine in the Kola nut is chemically bonded and its effect is different. These substances act like a tonic, stimulating the nervous system and the heart, and enabling high performance in athletes. They also help with fatigue and depression and are said to have aphrodisiac properties.
History: In many african societies, the Kola nut is considered a symbol of hospitality and presented to guests as a gift.
