The Carob Tree (Ceratonia siliqua), aka St. John’s Bread, is a evergreen shrub or tree in the pea family (Fabaceae), native to the Mediterranean, growing to 20 meters (60ft) tall. The crown is broad and spherical, supported by a thick trunk with brown bark and sturdy branches. Leaves are 10 – 20 cm (4-8in) long, the flowers are small and numerous, spirally arranged along the inflorescence axis. The Carob Tree likes limy, even saliferous soil (often found close to mediterranean coastlines) and does not require irrigation or pesticides; it is therefore well suited for organic cultivation.

The tree carries the first fruit, edible pods with a leathery skin, after 6 years; in the early years, the pods are green, later they turn chocolate brown and grow 10 – 30 cm (4-12in) long. They take a full year to ripen, and once ripe, can stay on the branches for months. The ripe, dried pod (botanically speaking actually a legume) is ground to Carob powder which is used as a substitute for cocoa powder. Carob pod meal is used as a energy-rich feed for livestock; it is a polysaccharide, consisting mostly of galactose (20%) and mannose (70%). Both can only partially be digested by humans, which is why its medicinal use is chiefly as a dietary fiber (it can bind 80 to 100 times its own weight in water). One component of the pod meal, Carob wax, has blood pressure and cholesterin reducing properties; it also promotes weight loss.

Carob contains various amino acids (6%), flavanoids and is rich in trace minerals (iron, phosphor and calcium; it contains three times more calcium than milk).

History: The name Carob originates from the arabic (Charrub). Carob was eaten in ancient Egypt and believed to be a aphrodisiac. Carob juice drinks are traditionally drunk during the Islamic month of Ramadan; dried Carob fruit is traditionally eaten on the jewish holiday Tu Bishvat.

Note: In his forthcoming book (‚Natural Healing – A Concise Overview‘, Sanamin Publishing, 2014), the author describes the use of Carob in a new, natural weight-loss and weight-management program called ‚Phyto-Joule‘, which combines the unique weight-reducing properties of various medicinal plants. See excerpt under ‚Phyto-Joule‘ (after These Videos).

Introduction: Phytojoules (‘Phyto’ = plant; ‘Joule’ = energy unit) are naturally occurring substances in medicinal plants which activate body metabolism and reverse fluid retention.

Is there scientific evidence as to the effect of Carob in weight loss?

According to recent research, the constituents in Carob (Ceratonia siliqua), in particular polyphenols and dietary fiber (seeds), have weight loss promoting properties1, 2, 3. Numerous studies also confirmed the ability of substances contained in Carob Tree seeds to inhibit or reduce carbohydrate absorption; this seems due to a blocking effect of tanning agents (gallic acid, epikatechole, gallokatechole, asafoetidic acid, querecetin, myricetin) on digestive enzymes (trypsin, aplha-amylase, chymotrypsin, lipase).

What is the role of Carob in a weight loss program? – A summary of the effects observed with a 28-day program consisting of Carob Tree seeds dietary supplements (only).

Intially, a reduced metabolism of proteins, in some cases also a reduced or halted weight increase, accompanied by a three- to five-fold increase in elimination of gallic salts (resulting in a reduction of cholesterin levels) was observed, followed by a metabolic reduction of additional proteins, carbohydrates and lipids (metabolism for carbohydrates/amylase and lipids/lipase appears to be blocked). If taken with meals, Carob Tree seeds dietary supplements promote a reduction of appetite and digestive ability.

The Phyto-Joule Weight Loss Plan – Overview of Basic Components.

1. Carob Tree seeds (Ceratonia siliqua semen) reduce hunger and hunger attachs in the most natural and effective way possible – by creating a feelig of satiation and cleansing the digestive tract at the same time (contain 88% Galactomannan, a dietary fiber). In addition, the unique composition of bio-active substances contributes to a significantly reduced absorption of carbohydrates and fats. Take 3-4 capsules as a dietary supplement 1 hour before meals.

2. Corn silk (Zea mais stigmata) is a strong diuretic. It contains 5% minerals, including potassium, and is also rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (polyphenols), including Sitosterol, which is a natural ‚fat burner‘. Corn silk promotes body (re-)shaping by way of reversing water retention. Take 1 capsule as a dietary supplement each in the morning and late afternoon.

3. Cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao cortex) is a strong diuretic which contains Theobromine (a popular alkaloid used in contemporary medicine), which is a natural ‚carbohydrate blocker‘. Cocoa pod husk promotes body (re-)shaping. Take 1 capsule as a dietary supplement each in the morning and late afternoon.

Use: There are two basic ways to run with a Carob dietary supplement program, i.e. a focus on reducing appetite or a focus on partially inhibiting digestion, respectively.

(a) Reducing appetite: Take 3-4 capsules Carob Tree seeds dietary supplement 1 hour before meals. Carob Tree (fiber) swells in the digestive tract, promoting a feeling of satiation.

(b) Inhibiting digestion: Take 1-2 capsules Carob Tree seeds dietary supplement with meals and accompany with a light diuretic (see options in the cross-reference, e.g. Buckthorn, Aloe, Ginger, Black Cumin) between meals. Combine with 1 capsule each of Corn silk (Zea mais stigmata) and Cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao cortex) at 10 am and 4.40 pm, respectively. If you feel constipated, add 2-3 capsules of a mild diuretic (see options in the cross-reference, e.g. Buckthorn, Aloe, Psyllium), accompanied by a generous amount of water, before sleep.
