Ginger, or Ginger root, is the rhizome (underground stem or root) of the plant Zingiber officinale, a member of the Ginger family (Zingiberaceae) – a classification with over 1300 species. Ginger cultivation began in South Asia and has since spread to other parts of Asia, East Africa and the Caribbean.

The contents of Ginger root, essential oils with Zingiberene, the pungent Gingerol and Shogaol, have a stimulating effect on the digestive system and the body metbolism in general. They also have anti-inflammatory properties. There are numerous accounts about beneficial effects of Ginger root on headache, stomach ulcers and rheumatoid joint disorders. Applied externally, e.g. on skin blemishes or mucous membranes, Ginger root has a soothing effect. Ginger root, boiled in hot water and applied to the skin, may promote healing of eczema, wounds and insect bites.

Sea faring folk use Ginger root to prevent sea sickness; in a double-blind study with 80 danish sailors on high seas, the use of Ginger root, as compared to a placebo, reduced vomiting significantly. In a study conducted at a US university, three groups of a dozen persons each were given Ginger root, the drug ‚Dimenhydinate‘ and a placebo, respectively. The test persons were then exposed to a rotating and moving chair for 6 minutes each. The dozen which had been given Ginger root lived through the entire ordeal (6 minutes), while the group which had been given the drug only persisted 4 minutes on average. The group with the placebo endured only 2 minutes and suffered from nausea and dizziness.

History: In earlier days, Ginger was typically mixed with certain regional herbs to soften its effect on the stomach. In Eastern Medicine, Ginger is considered ‚hot‘, i.e. it stimulates circulation, deconstricts the peripheral vascular system, prevents vomiting and bloating, soothes cramps and is generally indicated with nausea and during pregnancy. In China, Ginger root, called ‘Gan-jiang‘, is chiefly used to ‚warm‘ stomach and lungs, as it increases ‚yang‘ energy. Tea brewed from Ginger root is a common folk remedy for colds.

Note: Do not use together with anticoagulant drugs, as Ginger root also has anticoagulant properties. See your physician or pharmacist if you think you need to take anticoagulant drugs.

Dosage

Take 3-6 capsules daily, with plenty of water.
