Juniper (Juniperus communis) is a coniferous evergreen tree in the Conifer family (Cupressaceae); it has the largest range of any woody plant, throughout the cool temperate northern hemisphere from the arctic south to around 30°N latitude in North America, Europe and Asia. It has needle-like leaves in whorls of three; the leaves are green, with a single white stomatal band on the inner surface. It is dioecious, with male and female cones on separate plants.

The seed cones are berry-like, green ripening in 18 months to purple-black with a blue waxy coating; they are spherical, 4 – 12 mm (0.2-0.5in) diameter and usually have three fused scales, each scale with a single seed. The male cones are yellow, 2 – 3 mm (approx. 0.1in) long, and fall soon after shedding their pollen in spring.

Juniper berries contain juniperin, essential oils (mostly terpenes), tanning agents, resin, acetic acid, formic acid, pentosanes, potassium, calcium and manganese – a complex of bio-active substances which relieves cramps, cleanses the blood, lung, stomach and intestines, acts as a tonic and diuretic and also has disinfecting properties. Juniper berries stimulate the metabolism and are often used in treatment of gout and rheumatism to help eliminate uric acid from the body. In treatment of edema and water in the tissue, it is used to stimulate the kidneys and the elimination of water from the tissue.

Counter Indications: Juniper stimulates the uterus and should not be taken during pregnancy. Patients with kidney infections (nephrosis) need to closely watch dosage.
