Hop (Humulus lupulus strobulus) is a genus in the Cannabis family (Cannabaceae), native to Europe, western Asia and North America. It is a perennial, herbaceous climbing plant which sends up new shoots in early spring and dies back to a cold-hardy rhizome (subterranean stem or root) in autumn. The yellow-green blossoms are followed by cones which impart bitterness and flavor and also have preservative qualities. The wild variety of Hop grows on nitrogen rich, preferably humid soil, for example in floodplain forests, up to about 6 meters (19ft) tall (significantly smaller than the cultivated variety). Hop is the main ingredient of many beers, and as such is cultivated for use by the brewing industry. The bio-active ingredients in Hop include lupulin, myrcene, humulene, xanthohumuol, myrcenol, linalool, labolite, estrogen-like plant hormones, essential oils, hop bitterns, tannins and resin.

During menopause, the hormone requirements of women change from estrogen to progesteron, a substance which is contained as diosgenin in Yam root (see Yam); a regime of alternating Hop and Yam in 2 week intervals helps to regulate hormonal imbalances which often occur during menopause. Hop may also alleviate sexual overstimulation and is very helpful with betwetting. To summarize Hop characteristics: it promotes calmness and reason. After prolonged storage, however, it may develop stimulating properties.

History: The calming effect of Hop was already known in the Middle Ages and Paracelsus, among other, appreciated the sedative properties of Hop. In those days, beers tended to be of a very low alcohol content and were commonly consumed as a safer alternative to unsafe water. Each village tended to have one or more small breweries with a barley field and a hop garden in close vicinity.

Note: Men may experience a loss of libido when consuming to much beer, which is due to the estrogen-like plant hormones in Hop.
