Yam (Dioscorea mexicana), aka Mexican Yam or Cabeza de Negro, is a annual vine in the Yam family (Dioscoreaceae), native to Mexico and southward to Panama.

Yam has a partly to completely above-ground, dome-shaped caudex (rootstock, stem) with a thick, woody outer layer of up to 90 cm (3ft) in diameter and 20 - 25 cm (8-10in) in height, and heart-shaped leaves. The caudex is divided into regular, polygonal plates that become protuberant with age, and separated by deep fissures. The vigorous annual vines may reach 9 meters (30ft) before dying back in winter.

Yam is notable for its production of diosgenin (2%), which is a precursor for the synthesis of female hormones such as progesterone, and can be used as a long-term supplement to maintain or restore a balanced hormone household and menstrual cycles. Diosgenin stimulates production of DHEA (DeHydroEpiAndrosteron) in the adrenal glands. DHEA is known to slow the aging process; it also promotes fertility (for recommendations of specific use see section below).

The mexican variety (Dioscorea mexicana) in particular is used for its medicinal properties, i.e. the regulation of female hormones. Yam is a natural alternative to hormone treaments for those looking to avoid the various side effects of synthetic substances. A US physician who undertook a 20-year study about the effects of diosgenin on a large number of patients observed significant benefits with patients suffering from menopause and osteoporosis.

Yam is recommended for a wide range of health complaints – often used alternating with Hops (Humulus lupulus strobulus) – and also effective as a anti-aging remedy.

History: In Asia, Africa and Central America, the over 600 varieties of Yam have been a food staple for centuries. In 1936 japanese researchers started the scientific research into diosgenin.

Counter Indication: Do not use Yam during pregnancy.

Recommendation for treatment of PMS: start on the 14th day of the menstruation cycle with 2 capsules three times daily and continue until reaching the period. Recommendation for treatment of problems related to menopause: start on the 14th day of the menstruation cycle with 1-2 capsules of Hops (Humulus lupulus strobulus) three times daily and then change to 1-2 capsules of Yam three times daily for the rest of the time until reaching the period. Also in combination with Borage oil (Borago officinalis) and Evening Primrose oil (Oenothera biennis).
