The artichoke (Cynara cardunculus, Cynara scolymus), a perennial plant of the Daisy family (Asteraceae) with a thistle-like appearance, can reach 50 to 240 cm in height (20 to 95in). The plant originates from the Mediterranean, Macronesia and western Asia. It is cultivated for the fleshy leaves of the florescence which are consumed as a vegetable. The rest of the leaves grows to be 80 cm long (31.5) and 40 cm wide (15.5) ; their back is of a hairy, grey surface. Due to its rich content of certain flavanoids and quinic acid derivatives, the plant has a wide range of medical and dietetic uses. It was voted medical plant of the year 2003.

History : Artichokes were known as edible food and dietary supplement in antique Egypt. The writer Plinius described the plant as the food of the wealthy Romans. In the middle ages the plant’s leaves medicical proprieties became known and it was used for treatment of diseases of the gall bladder and for rejuvenation of the digestive tract. Artichoke leaves have appetite enhancing, digestive and cholesterine reducing properties. Cynarine, a bitter, biologically active ingredient, stimulates the metabolisms of liver and gall bladder. The fleshy leaves renew the liver cells and improve fat metabolism (‘burning fat’). They also reduce swelling of the liver, soothe hepatitis, support the detoxifying processes of the liver and, due to the increased flow of gall, help avoiding gall stones. This increased flow incidentially causes a reduction of the cholesterine level and the cleansing of the blood, and in some cases reduces the incidence of migraine attacks.

Note : Nursing women should not consume artichoke leaves, as this may impede the production of milk.
