Samphire (Crithmum maritimum), aka Rock Samphire, is a edible, wild plant in the Parsley family (Apiaceae), found on southern and western coasts of Britain and Ireland, on mediterranean and western coasts of Europe and the Black Sea. It typically grows about 40 cm (1.5ft) tall. Samphire has fleshy, divided, blue-green, aromatic leaves about 7 cm (2.75in) long.

Culpeper described the leaves as having a ‘pleasant, hot and spicy taste’. The stems, leaves and seed pods may be pickled in hot, salted, spiced vinegar, or the leaves used fresh in salads.

Samphire stimulates appetite, helps with digestion, cleanses kidneys and stimulates kidney and liver functions. It is rich in vitamins and trace elements which in turn improves enzyme function. Samphire also regulates and replenishes minerals which in turn improves water and fat management, with beneficial effects on, among other, edema and cellulite. It is rich in vitamin C.

History: In the 19th century, Samphire was being shipped in casks of seawater from the Isle of Wight to markets in London at the end of May each year. Samphire used to be cried in London streets as ‘Crest Marine’. During the 15th and 16th century, women would collect Samphire from the coast lines, pickle them over several months and then sell them to seafaring ships which would carry them as a food supply and remedy against skorbut (high vitamin C content).

In England, Samphire was cultivated in gardens, where it grows readily in a light, rich soil. Obtaining seed commercially is now difficult, and in the United Kingdom the removal of wild plants is illegal.

Take 1-6 capsules daily, with plenty of water.
