Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a perennial plant of the Bromelia family (Bromeliaceae). Originally from South and Central America, the plant is cultivated in any tropical region of the world. The fruit is grown for its rich flesh and sweet juice which is consumed fresh or processed in canneries.

History: The name Ananas derives from nanà - the word for fruit in the Guarani language. Pineapple was cultivated many hundreds of years before the arrival of Columbus and its use reached far into the northern regions of Mexico. It was used as food, as medicine and for the production of wine. Christopher Columbus discovered the plant in Guadeloupe on his second voyage in 1493.

The cone shaped stem of the plant can grow up to 35 cm long (13.5in), with a diameter of 2 to 3.5 cm at the base (0.75 to 1.4in) and 5 to 7 cm at the widest point just below the top (2 to 2.75in). The leaves grow from the stem like leaves of a rose bud.

The fruit of the pineapple is rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C) and minerals (potassium, magnesium, phosphor, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine), enzymes (e.g. bromelain) as well as vitamin E and carotene. Ferments (bromelain) have been discovered in the stem of the plant which can split starch and glycogen into maltose molecules, thereby improving the assimilation of proteins, which in turn improves digestion and fat metabolism (‘burning’). These extraordinary properties are captured in the capsules and they are a critical component in any weight loss program. In combination with papaya and/or spirulina, these properties are even further enhanced. A slice of pineapple before or after a rich meal will help with digestion. Pineapple also contains tryptophane, a precurser to serotonine, a mood brightener which is sold as a natural anti-depressant (see also Griffonia).
